Implant restorations refer to the crowns, bridges, or dentures that are placed on underlying dental implant abutments. A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jaw bone where the patient is missing teeth. Once the implant is placed by the implant surgeon, it is left undisturbed for several months. After this healing time the implant is checked by the implant surgeon and if everything is OK, the patient is ready for a restorative dentist to place a dental restoration on the implant abutment. Single tooth implants are normally restored with crowns, while implants that span a limited space may be restored with a fixed bridge, and multiple implants involving long spans or even the entire upper or lower jaw may be restored with removable or semi-removable dentures.
Implants have an excellent track record and have been very reliable if they are taken care of properly. It is imperative they be kept immaculately clean to prevent infection of the gum or bone around the implant. Implant patients should be seen a minimum of twice a year by their dentist and hygienist.
